In homeland security applications, UMRR radars are used for medium (50m) and long range (100m) surveillance (detection range given for a human person). Larger reflectors like motorbikes or passenger cars can be detected up to 100m (medium range sensor) or 240m (long range sensor). The unique feature of smartmicro's surveillance radars is the fact that the devices not operate as standard motion detectors, but are capable of precisely measuring the position and the speed vector of moving objects. Special algorithms allow to track the motion of any intruder along its path. Therefore it is possible for the first time to define one or multiple alarm zones of any shape. One or more predefined areas can be secured using a single sensor or a set of sensors in a network. See the full video: Demo Video (40 MB, avi). Furthermore, a dual mode surveillance operation of the sensors is available. If this feature is activated, not only the position measuring motion detection is performed. Additionally between the radar and a reflector, the return signal of the direct reflection path is monitored. If any obstacle is disrupting the direct reflection path, it will be detected immediately. This technique provides built-in redundancy, as both operational modes (motion detection and direct reflection path monitoring) are run in parallel. In most applications, the task is to reliably detect humans (either moving or stopped) inside the field of view. At the same time a low false alarm rate (caused by rain, snow or other moving objects inside the field of view, but outside pre-selected alarm areas) is required.
