Lane Change Assist

UMRR-301x-22-27 Lane Change Assist Sensor System:
The lane change assist sensor system consists of two radar units. The devices are mounted in the corners of the rear bumper behind the fascia at a certain mechanical squinting angle. One sensor operates as system master, the second units is configured as slave. By using a private CAN link between them, the data of both radars are combined in a sophisticated sensor fusion tracking algorithm.

The field of view is selected to cover most of the blind spot warning zone, and an area containing three lanes (left neighbor, driving and right neighbor lane) 70m back. It operates on straight roads as well as in curves down to a certain radius. This is achieved by a special patended antenna design in combination with detection algorithms that exploit intentional side lobes of the beam pattern.

Detection algorithms, tracking, object-to-lane mapping and the warning algorithm (illuminating warning LEDs) are performed by the system, any extra customer code can be integrated. No extra ECU is required. The master interfaces the powertrain CAN bus.

The lane change assist system’s sensors represent derivatives of the UMRR platform. The signal processing software was optimized for:

  • Lower speed driving (good object separation capability).
  • High speed driving up to 70m/s (requiring fast reaction time and correct situation assessment).
  • Issue warning if any object moving at > 5km/h ground speed is inside the warning zone.
  • No warning on stationary objects.
  • Early detection of vehicles being overtaken (appropriate field of view).
  • Early detection of vehicles that overtake (sufficient max. range, short cycle time).
  • Very low false alarm rate.
  • Built-in warning algorithm, high comfort for the driver (early warning, intuitive reception).

Technical Data:

  • Range up to 90m.
  • Min. range 0.9m (no relative motion target to sensor, presence detection < 0.9m is provided).
  • Min. range 0.5m (relative motion target to sensor).
  • Sensor operates at speeds up to 250km/h (ego vehicle speed).
  • Angle interval: see icon.

Targeted applications:

  • Blind Spot Detection.
  • Lane Change Assist.
  • Rear Cross Traffic Alert.
  • Warning to open door if object approaches from behind.
  • Rear Pre-Crash/Pre-Safe applications.
